FRAD
Title:  FRAD
Description:  The engineer of this consist struck up some friendly conversation as I snapped this photo. This train had been "FRAD", meaning it was basically under special restricted movement orders. Apparently, an inspector with the Federal Railroad Administration had been by Calhoun in the last week, and the four locomotives in this consist has been ordered shutdown because of mechanical and safety problems. On this night, the two lead locomotives were powered up under a one-time move order for a run to the maintenence shops in Nashville, TN. The other two locomotives in the consist were restricted from even being started up.

Description:  One of the hazards of railfanning in Georgia in the summertime is the man-eating kudzu plant! Originally brought in by the railroads from Russia to control erosion along the right-of-way, the stuff turned out to be a bigger problem than the problem it was brought in to control! Soon, vast areas of Geogia, Alabama, and Mississippi were eaten by the plant! It grows on anything and everything it touches (there is a utility pole under it out of picture to the left), and it grows so fast that it actually even grows on the tracks themselves! Take a knife with you along with your camera!
