Mt. Chetooga  Contributor's Pick!
The bore at Tunnel Hill is the only tunnel on the Western & Atlantic Sub. The "modern" bore is 460+ meters in length, and was built in 1928. The old bore (to the right) was finished in 1850. It was a target for Andrew's raiders in 1862, but survived the Civil War undamaged. It was closed when the new bore opened, and was actually "lost" for a few years as Kudzuu consumed the tunnel entrances on both sides of the mountain. The old bore is now part of a walking trail.
